I know, I used to be a Brooklyn snob myself. But since I moved to LIC, you hipsters and too cool to be hipsters can have it. Named after Polish military commander and American Revolutionary War fighter Kazimierz Pułaski, it connects Brooklyn and Queens. Designed by Frederick Zurmuhlen and opened to traffic on September 10, 1954, is a bascule bridge, a type of drawbridge. It carries six lanes of traffic over the water, Long Island Rail Road tracks, and the entrance to the Queens Midtown Tunnel. It has great views of the industrial areas surrounding and the Manhattan Skyline and serves as the halfway point in the New York City Marathon.

Weathered Romance
Wedged in the middle of the East River, Roosevelt Island's Renwick Ruin developed for the treatment of that "loathsome malady" A.K.A. smallpox, is a beautiful example of the Gothic Revival style of Architecture.
Groovin' in the sand
Each Summer the Water Taxi Beach opens Harry's Bar. People who go there for the first time are amazed this exists so close to Manhattan. Come get your Summer on.
Gantry Plaza State Park
The 2.5-acre (1.0 ha) park is a former dock facility and includes restored gantry cranes used from the middle 19th to middle 20th century to load and unload rail car floats and barges serving local industry and the Long Island Rail Road.
Clandestine art project
A few days ago I noticed a new addition to the Gantry Plaza State Park pier pylons. They rise and fall with the tides. At low tide they dance with the ripples.

A view to a kill
Movin' on Up
I have lived on the East River Riviera (Long Island City) since August 2007. Yes there is a fairly large stroller contingent, but they pretty much keep to themselves save a few early hours on the weekends. One stop East on the 7 Train from Grand Central Station is my sanctuary that looks over stalks of concrete sprouting up from the fertile atoll they call Manhattan.
